SERVIDYNE CERTIFYING MORE SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS IN 2010

Customers awarded one Platinum and four Gold LEEDTM ratings and more than 125 ENERGY STAR® Labels year-to-date, nearly 80% more than last year.

ATLANTA – November 18, 2010, – SERVIDYNE, INC. (Nasdaq: SERV), an energy efficiency and demand response company, announced today that it has already reached new sustainability milestones for its customers in 2010, including one customer who has been awarded the prestigious LEED-EB (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings) Platinum certification and four other customers who have achieved LEED-EB Gold certifications for their buildings. Servidyne served as the LEED and engineering consultant for these projects in support of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) rating system.

In addition to the LEED-EB certifications, year-to-date Servidyne has guided more than 125 customer buildings in successfully achieving the ENERGY STAR Label, greatly surpassing the Company’s significant accomplishment of achieving 86 ENERGY STAR Labels for its customers during all of 2009.

“We are proud to have helped our customers achieve these successes,” noted Barry Abramson, Servidyne’s Senior Vice President. “The prestigious distinctions of LEED and ENERGY STAR provide well-deserved recognition of our customers’ ongoing efforts to make their buildings more environmentally sustainable, and build on Servidyne’s 35-year legacy of promoting energy efficiency and building performance optimization. Sustainability consulting is one of the fastest growing components of our business, and we look forward to additional opportunities to assist building owners and managers in achieving their energy and environmental goals.”

The distinguished LEED-EB Platinum certification is the highest sustainability rating possible for existing buildings, and promotes a whole-facility approach to sustainability through building efficiency optimization and environmental stewardship. Servidyne’s customer is only the second in the Washington, D.C. metro area to receive the LEED-EB Platinum certification, and just the fourth in the United States to achieve this superlative rating since the launching of LEED-EB v3. The building is the only multi-tenant building in the D.C. metro area and one of the oldest buildings in the U.S. ever to achieve the elite LEED-EB Platinum rating.

Other successful LEED certifications managed by Servidyne so far this year include a customer who received the second LEED-EB v3 Gold certification awarded in the State of Illinois. Another customer’s building was only the fifth in the State of California to receive a LEED-EB v3 Gold certification, while two other LEED-EB Gold certifications were achieved by customers under previous versions of the LEED-EB rating system.

Awarded by Green Building Certification Institute, LEED-EB Certification provides third-party verification of an existing facility’s proven environmental sustainability. To qualify for this distinction, a building must meet stringent material and performance standards. According to the USGBC Website, LEED-certified facilities demonstrate an owner’s commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility, and result in:

  • Lower operating costs and increased asset values
  • Reduced landfill waste
  • Energy and water conservation
  • Healthier and safer buildings for occupants
  • Reduced greenhouse gas emissions
  • Tax rebates, zoning allowances and other incentives

ENERGY STAR Label facilities are those that meet strict energy performance standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. These buildings use less energy, are less expensive to operate, and generate fewer greenhouse gas emissions than their non-ENERGY STAR peers. Energy usage in commercial buildings and manufacturing plants in the U.S. accounts for nearly half of all energy consumption at a cost of over $200 billion per year, more than any other sector of the economy.
